Farm Dirt Compost™
PLANT-BASED VEGAN
Farm Dirt Compost™ is an outstanding organic blend of composted fruits, vegetables, leaves and wood chips, especially cultivated to produce the highest levels of beneficial soil life possible. It is loaded with beneficial microbes that are ideal for plant growth and health. These microbes are fed sugars from your plants' roots, created through photosynthesis from atmospheric carbon dioxide, and these sugars are the exact carbon-chain sequences that will attract the microbes most beneficial to the plants' health and longevity. This is how carbon sequestration actually happens! Finished and fine-screened at 1/4 inch. As if that's not enough, we then take our fine-screened Farm Char Biochar™, soaked in our proprietary home-brewed Jurassic Tea™ compost tea, and mix it into the screened compost. This brings the amazing benefits of biochar AND compost tea in a shelf-stable form to our already incredible compost!
It can be used as a one- to two-inch top dressing to bring life back into your existing garden soil, underneath the mulch layer. Or it can be used to make your own soil mixes. It can also be used to make an incredible compost tea (aerated/oxygenated liquid microbial ecosystem). Compost tea can substantially increase plant growth and help increase your plants' resistance to insects and disease.
Ingredients: Composted Fruits, Vegetables, Leaves and Wood Chips
Garden Mix
COMPOST, SAND, TOPSOIL
This has become our best-selling product ever since we first came out with it, and with good reason! A rare mix of genuine Farm Dirt Compost™ - aerated, highly-biologically active compost, fine mortar sand and premium composted topsoil. It combines the microbial benefits of our compost with the tilth of sand and the high nutritional value of our native topsoil, which is usually locked up due to pH issues that the compost microbes correct. We compost the topsoil to remove as many weed seeds as possible, and then screen it fine at 1/4 inch. A true sand/silt/clay loam. No wood dust or mulch fillers.
A ready-to-use mixture for your fruits, vegetables, flowers, trees and shrubs. A perfect "dump and go" product for raised bed gardens, filling in existing beds, or even as a potting soil. A benefit of using this as a potting soil is that the weight keeps the pot from falling over when the soil is drier and the plants are large.
Use for backfilling the hole for new plantings, even if in native soil. Although this mix does not require fertilizer, it is always a good idea to feed the microbial workers in the soil with a good organic fertilizer that contains mycorrhizal fungi.
Ingredients: Genuine Farm Dirt Compost™, Fine Mortar Sand and Premium Composted Topsoil
Living Mulch™
COMPOSTED HARDWOOD
A rich, moist, shredded mulch that has been composted for six months to a year. Made primarily from native Houston hardwood species. It is screened at 3/4 inch for a fine, even texture. It decomposes into a beautiful soil that helps grow enormous plants. Healthy plant growth comes from the mycelium that is generally missing from urban and suburban soils.
Our mulch comes with a generous dose of already-developed mycelium threads. No chemicals or dyes are ever used. We never use pallets, lumber or telephone poles in our mulch!
Use as a 1-2" layer on top of the soil to act as a blanket for your soil microbes to do their magic. Mitigates fluctuations in soil temperatures and hydration levels.
Disperses rain drops from pounding the soil, to keep it in place. Due to its shredded and composted nature, our mulch pieces interlock together and will not wash away.
Retains more water in the soil, where it belongs.
Reduces soil erosion and compaction. Soil life likes dark conditions. With a mulch "blanket" on top, the earthworms and soil microbes will work to condition your soil right up to the top where it meets the mulch.
Mulch also makes an incredibly QUIET pathway material, unlike noisy decomposed granite or gravel. Wildlife won't hear you coming from a mile away!
The fungi will turn it into a beautiful, rich soil as it decomposes and feeds your plants the most natural forest diet available.
Added benefit in Houston downpours - the earthworms in your soil will camp out in the mulch in the pathways until the rainwater soaks in, then they will get back to work in the soil instead of frying on the driveway!!
Composted and Shredded Leaves and Wood Chips, including the Cambium, Bark, Branches, Trunks and Twigs
Mushroom Mix™
COMPOST & MYCELIUM
This has quickly become a best-seller! We start with our classic Farm Dirt Compost™, which now includes our super-charged Farm Char Biochar™ - biochar that is enhanced with our own proprietary compost tea. That's just the beginning, though! Then we incorporate mushroom mycelium from saprophytic mushrooms like blue, pink, golden and pearl oyster mushrooms, lion's mane, reishi, shiitake, king trumpet and chestnut mushrooms. Saprophytic means that they grow on wood chips instead of horse manure, so NO MANURE is involved in the process. Also, this is a benefit because you may have noticed that you have more tree materials in your yard than horse manure (thank goodness), like leaves, sticks, bark and twigs, (not to mention mulch!). If you've heard about the beneficial health benefits of these species, just think of how much good their mycelium will be doing in your soil! Mycelium is the "root" structure of mushrooms, and forms relationships underground with the root systems of almost all plants. Mycelium is microscopic, so it can travel much farther in the soil, much faster, and in smaller crevices than plant roots. However, since they are intertwined with the plant roots, they share the bounty of nutrients, microbes and water that they produce and find, with your plants!
Use as a 1-2" topdressing on garden beds, underneath the mulch layer. Mix into potting mixes to bring loads of life into your potted plants. Blend into your own soil mixes for your garden and landscape plants. Can also be mixed with native soil to backfill holes around newly-installed plants.
Farm Dirt Compost™ screened at 1/4 inch, Farm Char Biochar™ soaked in our proprietary Jurassic Tea™, mushroom mycelium from saprophytic mushrooms like blue, pink, golden and pearl oyster mushrooms, lion's mane, reishi, shiitake, king trumpet and chestnut mushrooms.
Farm Char Biochar™
STABILIZED, INOCULATED CARBON
$50 per cubic foot bag
Our Farm Char Biochar™ is made from primarily Houston hardwood species that would have been bound for the landfill. The wood is burned in a way that removes the volatile compounds, but leaves the stable carbon skeleton. It is said that if all the microscopic pores in a fingernail-sized piece of biochar were opened up, it would cover the area of a football field. Biochar holds an incredible amount of water, and releases it when your plant roots need it. It also holds a lot of oxygen and beneficial soil microbes to help your plants thrive. Think of the particles as massive microbe condominiums, packing in a LOT of soil workers in a tiny amount of space to work magic in your garden. No chemicals are ever used. This is a fine-grained biochar that is super-charged with our own proprietary homemade Jurassic Tea™ compost tea. Get the benefits of our famous Jurassic Tea™ in a shelf-stable form that will inoculate your soil, while giving your soil microbes a safe haven from which to do their work.
Use 5% - 20% in your soil mixes. Apply a thin layer around your plants and on top of the soil, just under the mulch layer. The earthworms will do the heavy lifting of spreading it through the soil. Biochar is said to last in the soil for a thousand years, making it a very long-term, stable carbon sink that simultaneously supercharges your plants.
Ingredients: Local Houston tree species, including the bark, cambium, twigs, branches and trunks. Nothing is wasted!
Arborist Wood Chips
FRESH-CHIPPED HARDWOODS
$10 per cubic yard
Primarily native Houston hardwood species. Includes all parts of the tree - branches, twigs, cambium layer and leaves. A full nutrient profile to feed your soil microbes. The beneficial soil fungi treat this as as a royal buffet. They break down the wood, extract the nutrients, and feed them to your plant roots, which are conveniently located in the fungal "wood wide web" under your feet. There are a variety of particle sizes all mixed together, from shredded leaves up to wood chips that could be 4-6 inches long.
Use as a 1-2 inch layer on top of the soil to act as a blanket for your soil microbes to do their magic. Mitigates fluctuations in soil temperatures and hydration levels.
Disperses rain drops from pounding the soil, to keep it in place.
Retains more water in the soil, where it belongs.
Reduces soil erosion and compaction.
Arborist wood chips also make an incredibly QUIET pathway material, unlike noisy decomposed granite or gravel. Wildlife won't hear you coming from a mile away! We like to apply it up to 8 inches deep on pathways. This keeps your feet dry after Houston downpours.
The fungi will turn it into a beautiful, rich soil as it decomposes and feeds your plants the most natural forest diet available.
Added benefit in Houston downpours - the earthworms in your soil will camp out in the wood chips in the pathways until the rainwater soaks in, then they will get back to work in the soil instead of frying on the driveway!

Pathway Mulch™
QUIET, FOREST FLOOR PATHWAYS
$12.50 per cubic yard
These are the larger aged wood chips from screening our Living Mulch™. They are inoculated with all the biological goodness that the Living Mulch™ has, but are generally two inches to six inches in size. They will not break down into soil as quickly as our Living Mulch™, due to the larger particle size. They make a quiet, deep brown pathway that doesn't scare wildlife away as you walk, like decomposed granite does. At the same time, it slowly and steadily feeds your soil microbes where it meets the soil surface. Your plants' roots do not "stay within the lines" of your garden beds, and actually criss cross and form a solid living web under your entire property. The fungal mycelium digests these pathways slowly, and form long-term relationships with plant roots. The roots give the mycelium sugars that the plant produces through photosynthesis (carbon sequestration), and the mycelium feeds nutrients to the roots as it slowly digests the pathway mulch. As a bonus, the earthworms will come up into the pathways during heavy Houston downpours. After the rain, they'll get back to work in the soil instead of cooking on the driveway. Healthy plant growth comes from the mycelium that is generally missing from urban and suburban soils.
